A DVD Rental Service for Cineastes. Posted on 07/17/2002. |
A couple days ago, GreenCine launched. Most obviously, it's a competitor to Netflix. What it lacks in catalog breadth, it more than makes up for in two key ways: 1) A focus on classic, independent, and other more "arthouse" cinema; and 2) a strong community bent, filled with lists, discussion boards, reviews, and the like. One thing that won me over--I was able to find all of my top 11 films in their catalog, something I couldn't do at Netflix (which doesn't have THE LAST LAUGH). Oh, and number 3: as their About page shows, the strongly connected to the SF Bay Area film community. You can feel good about spending your money here!

COMMENT #1 I like your top 11. But I can't take seriously a video outlet that doesn't carry Bunuel's Los Olvidados or anything at all by Bresson. And you'll have to teach me how to feel good about spending my money anywhere. My fingers grow cold at the thought.

COMMENT #2 Well, I can't find any Bresson nor "Olvidados" on DVD, so that's not really GreenCine's fault...

COMMENT #3 i'm on GreenCine's trial period and if there are any DVDs that you want to watch but they dont have it in their catalog, you can email them and they'll actually find it for you, ASAP. since this is a new site, their customer service is very focused and personal. it's great, i say!

COMMENT #4 I just completed a trial period with GreenCine and can truthfully say I'm not impressed. A lot of titles, but most checked out. Also they're saying you have to have all dvds back to them by the end of the trial period when it takes forever getting back and forth? And you have to take all of the movies out of your queue or you'll be charged for a month? Never ran into this before with other rental sites. BE VERY CAREFUL. I wouldn't recommend this rental site.

COMMENT #7 I've been renting from Greencine for about three months now and am very pleased with them. They have a great anime selection and carry lots of titles not available from Netflix.
