Heading to Kansas City

Tomorrow I get on a plane for Kansas City. I'm there for a few days of business. Evenings free.

What should I do?

Count the fountains?

The Negro Leagues Hall of Fame (baseball) is there. I've never been, but I've been meaning to go....

Steer clear of Arthur Bryant's grease pit, a clear case of unwarranted barbecue bandwagonism. How's your memory? You ate there in 1980.

For BBQ, try Oklahoma Joe's. It's inside a gas station at 43rd and Mission Road just over on the Kansas side.

If you are still here on Friday night, check out First Friday's in the Crossroads Arts District when all of the galleries are open late and there are thousands of people out and about. Lots of visual art, performance art, film, etc. The neighborhood is Downtown between the loop and Crown Center.

Check "The Pitch," local free newsrag...

Hit 39th Street, around Bell & Stateline...great restaurants, bookstores, coffeeshops. Rumi's is excellent outdoor Meditarranean. Rent a Hookah there ;-) Good Sushi at place next to Saigan 39, good Asian (try awesome sause with fried tofu) at Blue Koi. Great Italian Ice at Angie's.

Avoid Westport at night unless you want crazy bars and drunken stooges. Houston's on the Plaza is good food, but always mobbed and a wait.
