An interesting attempt at a
visual language.

Use English correctly--
lose a job. Actually, this story is the most depressing thing I've heard of this week.

Remember when AOL was potentially "dead"? This
Wired piece from December 1996 on AOL is a really fun read in retrospect.

You know, I love Web design, but what I really want to do is direct.

Nifty animations show you
how chocolate is made.

A smart and funny
homepage. Rants about science, religion, supermodels, and life in the suburbs.

Catharsis.

A while back I pointed to
Stick Figure Death Theater. That site seems to have started a craze. Recently I've visited Stick Death and le Théâtre du Bâton Figure. In fact, Yahoo now has a category devoted to it.

Caleb Clark pierces through the hype about "online communities" and offers up some
real insight as to how they work, and how to grow them.
[Note: Unlike before, this link *is* working.]

I suggest you visit
SpyChaser, a game where you uncover clues to stop terrorists. The graphic design and writing for the game are quite good, and I'm not saying that just 'cause I did some UI consultation.

In a
presentation on the history of the internet, Vint Cerf offers up the
following chart showing market penetration of the internet.

Um, look at the dates.

Howard Rheingold's 1986 book
Tools For Thought, is a chronicle of the research that lead to the modern computing revolution, with particular attention paid to visionaries who wanted to make computers useful to normal people. Though a bit old (and now out of print), all the information is still valid and worth a look-see.

Lucky for user-centered designers of Web sites, there's a
study from the Pew Research Center for the People And The Press discussing how people use the Internet and, specifically, news.

A
sad but funny tale of lost data and existential crisis.

The
coolest Flash I've seen in a long time. And it's not at all interactive. Just sit back and enjoy.

Yeah, while I might be an Amazon affiliate, I must give big props to
Powell's Books. I found stuff there at far cheaper prices (it helps that Powell's sells used as well as new), and they were delivered in a timely fashion. Another friend has found out-of-print stuff there. Check it out!

Happy New Year!

Play around on the best site for researching domain names:
Domain Games.

Check out
MONKEYMedia's supercool Flash-based site, chock full of information on interaction design. In March, I'll be speaking at SXSW Interactive on a panel titled "Interface Design as Social Architecture," joined by Eric Gould, principal of MONKEY.
